About the event

Welcome to Elgin Pride's LGBTQ+ Book Club! All are welcome to read and discuss LGBTQ+ literature. Each month, we read a queer book together, then meet up at the library for book club. Hosted by Aron Ryan (he/they) at Gail Borden Public Library (main library location). We meet in the Grove Room on the second floor. Swing by the library for queer books and queer community.

What happens at book club?

  • Meet & Greet (10 minutes)

    • Chat with fellow fans of LGBTQ+ lit

  • Book Discussion (30 minutes)

    • Discuss that month's book. You don't need to read the whole book to participate; just note that in this case, there may be spoilers. You're also welcome to attend without reading any of the book. Hang out, vibe, and if you'd like, participate in book show & tell.

  • Book Show & Tell (20 minutes)

    • Discuss book(s) you've read, whether you love em or hate em

  • Tangents (??? minutes)

    • It's okay to not stick to the schedule. Let's see where the discussion leads! We have a lot of neurodivergent readers in our book club. We welcome getting sidetracked before gently returning to the beloved topic of books.

Book Selection:

Our book clubs strive to be supporting and affirming of diverse identities. For book selection, we aim to center BIPOC authors, illustrators, characters, and experiences. We aim to include books featuring diverse identities under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, welcoming intersectional identities of age, race, ethnicity, neurotype, disability, and more. We aim to include books available in multiple formats, including print, e-audiobook, and e-book. We work with local libraries to facilitate access to upcoming book club selections.

Health & Safety Guidelines:

Please protect your health and the health of our community. If you are sick, suspect you might be sick, or in close contact with someone who is sick, staying home is encouraged as the first preferred option to practice self-care and community care. As the second option, masking is encouraged to mitigate the spread of confirmed or suspected illnesses. If you are sick or suspect you might be sick, and opt to attend an event, please wear your mask for the duration of the event. N-95 or KN-95 masks are recommended for the best possible protection. We host many Elgin Pride events on a monthly basis. If you’re unable to make an event, you’re always welcome to catch the next one. By honoring these guidelines, we ensure that Elgin Pride events are made more accessible to immunocompromised individuals and to all Elgin Pride friends.
